CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

The windowless interrogation room was stifling. At least it wasn't a jail cell, at least not yet, anyway. Aubrey and Forester had not said a word to each other since being arrested by the soldiers. They had exchanged a few knowing glances for support, but their training told them to remain silent and see what the play was. They had been stuffed in the room, watched over by two soldiers carrying Thompson submachine guns.

Aubrey thought if they opened up with those things in this room, what a racket that would make.

Finally, the door opened, and several officers came in, one of them carrying the Americans' pistols. A senior man came in slowly and, with a smile on his face, looked down upon the two Americans.

Only one empty chair was left in the room, and this senior officer took it. He clasped his hands on the wooden table that separated him from his two captives.

"You are in very big trouble, my friends."

They had confiscated everything, including Forester's US Navy credentials, which clearly said he worked for ONI. Forester had seen no reason to use a work name and phony ID. Cuba was a friendly nation towards the US; some might call it a puppet state.

On the other hand, Aubrey had nothing; she was a civilian, a journalist, running around the Cuban countryside with a firearm.

"Sir," Aubrey said, "we were out for a drive when we were attacked."

"Out for a drive heavily armed?"

"I work for the US Navy. Both of the pistols are mine," Forester said. "When we were attacked, Aubrey took one to defend herself."

"Is that so?" The man said. "And why do you bring weapons into my country."

"I am with the Office of Naval Intelligence." He looked at the man and raised his eyebrows.

"Leave us," the man said. One of the officers was about to protest, but the senior officer gave him a harsh look, and the room was quickly vacated.

"I am Colonel Fugencio Batista. I oversee Cuba's military forces, including its security services."

My my, Aubrey thought, the top dog sent down here to interrogate us.

"Just what exactly are you doing in Cuba? I need to know."

"We were out for a drive, I wanted to see Cienfuegos. I heard it's beautiful."

You were picked up in the countryside, miles from the highway to Cienfuegos.

"We got lost," Aubrey said.

"And the girl?"

"Hitchhiker we picked up," Aubrey said.

Batista nodded. "Nonsense. You were spying on the radio station. What interest is that to you?"

"It's a matter of national security," Forester said. He looked at Aubrey, and he knew trying to lie his way out of this wasn't going to work.

"Whose nation, yours or mine?" Batista said.

"Both. We have reason to believe that radio station was being used by German agents to broadcast into the United States. They're threatening our shipping."

"Not this business about a secret base again; I told you people, the Germans could not build anything in Cuban territory, or the Caribbean for that matter, without my knowing it. It is a fantasy."

"Maybe we wanted to see for ourselves," Aubrey said, playing along.
